199+ Frequently Asked Questions About Ceramic Coating: Now Answered!

My name is George. I own and operate Coatings by the Bay based right here in Kaukauna, WI. We serve the Appleton and Green Bay areas. We are new to the area, but not new to Ceramic Coatings. As this is a new website; I asked a friend of mine outside of the industry to look over my website and give me his thoughts. The biggest thing he brought up was how he wishes I had a dedicated frequently asked questions page; not just the short blurb of 10 or so questions near the packages. I love a great challenge – little did I know how many questions I would find on Answer the Public. For those who don’t know – this is a tool that will show you any question searched in any Geographical area.

I found over 199 frequently asked questions that were searched at least 10 times in the US in March of 2024. With this list I did my absolute best to answer these questions in an unbiased manner. There is some redundancy that I tried to weed out because this will already be an incredibly long page to navigate. You’ll notice that the primary question may read “Where to Buy Ceramic Coating” and then I grouped any other very similar question in the bottom of the answer box; like “Best Place to Buy Ceramic Coating Near Me”. This helped to bring the list down to bit under 100 unique questions consistently being asked. Additionally I did my best to group the questions. This resulted in 5 sections titled:

Frequently Asked Questions Related to is Ceramic Coating Worth it / Pricing:

Are Ceramic Coatings Worth It?

Whether Ceramic Coating is worth it depends on your priorities and expectations. Ceramic Coatings offer several benefits, including long-lasting protection, enhanced gloss, and ease of maintenance. However, they can be expensive and require professional application. If you value the benefits and are willing to invest in proper maintenance, a Ceramic Coating can be worth it for your vehicle.

Where to Buy Ceramic Coating At?

This is the MOST popular question in relation to Ceramic Coating by far. While many claim to have Ceramic Coating (dealerships, car washes, big box stores) – our suggestion is from a professional like Coatings by the Bay or another detailer local to you. If you are locked into the DIY Ceramic Coating route there are a couple options like Duraslic, Avalon King and Adams. These are rated for 1-2 years. Professional Installers will get you 5-10 years.

What Does Ceramic Coating Do?

Ceramic Coating is constantly OVER sold for what it can accomplish. Keeping it extremely focused and transparent; Ceramic Coating can only accomplish 3 things: High gloss, easy maintenance and protection from mother nature (Bug guts, bird droppings, UV rays, etc). If any installer or manufacturer claims “scratch resistance” or “rock chip protection” RUN. PPF is the only thing that accomplishes any notable resistance to scratching or rock chips.

Why Ceramic Coating for Cars?

Ceramic Coating on your car or truck has major upside. It will help to keep the vehicle cleaner; longer. Ceramic Coating on cars and trucks allows for incredibly easy maintenance. Another reason why you should have Ceramic Coating installed is that it buys you peace of mind against chemical damage / etching from bird droppings, bug guts, hard water spots and more. While you cannot just ignore these ailments – you also don’t need to rush to the gas station to scrub something off. The other options (like wax) require reapplication way too often or are incredibly costly (ppf).

Why Ceramic Coating is Bad? / Why Ceramic Coating is Good?

Ceramic Coating may be considered “bad” because there is a higher sticker price attached to it being installed versus wax. Other than that; any downfall that Ceramic Coating has comes from poor marketing from your local installer or manufacturers. Essentially them setting crazy expectations is why you feel like Ceramic Coating falls short.

Ceramic Coating is good because it is a cost effective way to protect your vehicle. The upfront cost may be high, but with no reapplication needed for YEARS – you actually save over the long term. It makes cleaning up much simpler and provides you with a high gloss long term chemical resistant shield over the vehicle.

Ceramic Coating is Good for a New Car?

Ceramic Coating is about the BEST decision you can make for your new car or truck. Relative to the other long-term protection on the market (PPF) – it is incredibly cheap and provides protection from most ailments your vehicle may face. It allows for a 90% clean with just quick power wash. New is the BEST time to have your Ceramic Coating installed as you will seal in the near perfect condition of your paint (“showroom new”).

Why Ceramic Coating is Expensive?

Why is Ceramic Coating so expensive is a VERY common question. I have written an entire blog answering this; and it could probably be even longer. Ultimately between the overhead cost, the skilled labor required and the chemical to install – about a 15% margin is left on our Ceramic Coating Packages. If the business you select is doing it cheaper than $1,000 – I would be concerned about how long they will be around. In this Blog: How Much Does Ceramic Coating Cost in 2024 – I break down our EXACT back end costs and transparently show why we charge what we charge.

How Much Ceramic Coating Cost for a Bike?

While we no longer offer Ceramic Coating on Motorcycles / Bikes – We used to charge about the price of a sedan, but with more inclusions. Essentially with a car our base package had only paint protected. For bikes we would include coating all chrome, the rims, seat and saddlebags. A reasonable price for a 5 year ceramic on a bike would be $800-$1000, maybe a little more.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (How Much Ceramic Coating for Motorcycles?)

How Much Ceramic Coating Cost for RV?

Traditionally for RV’s (and Boats); Ceramic Coating is billed by the foot. A Fair price for a long term professional Ceramic Coating application would be between $120 and $175 per linear foot. The variance will all be within the amount of paint correction needed on the gel coat.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ceramic Coating Related to Scratches / Damage:

Can Ceramic Coating Remove Scratches and Swirls?

Ceramic Coatings will NOT remove scratches or swirl marks. Similarly; Ceramic Coatings will not HIDE scratches or cover swirl marks. It is a nearly translucent coating that will only seal in the current condition of the paint below it. This is why paint correction is always suggested (if required) prior to installation of a Ceramic Coating. You cannot do any paint correction once Ceramic Coating is installed without first removing the coating.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Will Ceramic Coating Hide Scratches?) (Can Ceramic Coating Hide Scratches?) (Will Ceramic Coating Cover Scratches?) (Will Ceramic Coating Remove Scratches?) (Will Ceramic Coating Remove Swirls?) (Can Ceramic Coating Remove Scratches)

Can Ceramic Coating Damage Paint?

While Ceramic Coating will NOT damage car paint, a poorly executed installation will make it appear to have damaged your paint. A bad installation will result in what is called “high spots”; essentially a large collection of the ceramic material that was not properly leveled. It will show as a dark splotchy area as natural light cannot cleanly reflect off the surface of the paint below. This is completely repairable, but fast flash times is one of the main reasons it is not suggested for DIY Ceramic Coating installations. This is also a great reason to not hunt for the cheapest local guy. A few dollars saved – can cost hundreds to thousands to repair and reinstall.

Can Ceramic Coating Be Polished?

Ceramic Coating CAN be polished; however, this will usually result in a loss of hydrophobics. This does not mean your Ceramic Coating is “failing” – just that the pores are now clogged from a polish. Coatings by the Bay suggests you have your coating polished every 3 or so years – just to keep it looking as new as possible. To combat the loss of hydrophobics a ceramic topper is installed at absolutely no cost.

Will Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches

The scratch resistance of Ceramic Coating is the BIGGEST marketing gimmick ever executed. Ultimately, Ceramic Coating will resist incredibly minor scratching – like a jacket zipper slapping the door or a dry wipe of dust off of the hood. It will NOT stop your angry ex with a key or help you if you decide to offroad through thick brush. Only PPF can accomplish true scratch resistance. In my best efforts to keep this short I suggest you read this blog: What Brand of Ceramic Coating Does Coatings by the Bay Use? Much of the article is talking about the gimmicks in the market, and toward the bottom is a direct explanation of the “9H” rating Ceramic Coatings carry. It may shock you about how badly you have been lied to…

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Can Ceramic Coating Get Scratch Marks?) (Can Ceramic Coating Be Scratched?) (Will Ceramic Coating Prevent Swirls Marks?) (Can Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches?)

Will Ceramic Coating Prevent Rock Chips?

Ceramic Coating will NOT prevent Rock Chips. This follows very similarly to the scratch resistance of Ceramic Coating. If a shop or sales person claims the Ceramic Coating will act as a “sacrificial layer” – run. That sacrificial layer is literally chemically bonded to your clear coat. There is a 0,000001% chance that a rock somehow chips just the Ceramic Coating and not your paint. Only PPF offers rock chip resistance and even it is not infallible.

Ceramic Coating and Rain? / Ceramic Coating and Snow?

Ceramic Coating is safe and effective in both rain and snow! If Ceramic Coating is applied to the paint it will help less precipitation stick after rain or snow storms. If Ceramic Coating is applied to glass it will help with safety as precipitation sticks less to the windshield and other pieces of glass.

Will Ceramic Coating Fill In Scratches?

Technically, Ceramic Coating will “fill in” scratches, but not in the way you might be hoping. Ceramic Coating is nearly translucent; so it would offer chemical resistance and rust proofing effects to a scratch down to bare metal. What it will not do is mask that the scratches are there. The reason waxes seem to be able to “hide” scratches is that they contain fillers AND wax sits above the surface versus microscopically filling the pores of your car’s paint.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Will Ceramic Coating Fill In Swirl Marks?)

Will Ceramic Coating Prevent Water Spots?

Ceramic Coating will NOT prevent water spots – and it is almost more likely to get water spotting. Without going incredibly far down the rabbit hole – Ceramic Coating is hydrophobic. This means water beads up. The pooled water that doesn’t weigh enough to run off will sit on horizontal surfaces. If your car sits in the sun / heat (for an extended time) after a rainstorm – boom, water evaporates and minerals are left behind (a “hard water spot”). The good news is that with Ceramic Coating it is incredibly easy to remove said water spots; unlike an unprotected vehicle where etching is likely.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Will Ceramic Coating Prevent Hard Water Spots?)

Will Ceramic Coating Fix a Clear Coat?

Ceramic Coating will NOT fix a clear coat – nor should any installer ever try to apply Ceramic Coating to a failing, chipped or otherwise damaged clear coat.

Will Ceramic Coating Stop Rust?

Ceramic Coating WILL stop rust moving from the outside, inward. It should be noted that this is NOT the main way rust moves in the mid west / Wisconsin. Traditionally rust is caused by salt and moisture and will originate from under the vehicle / within hollow body panels (so inside, outward). Ceramic Coating could technically be used on the underside of vehicles, BUT we do not recommend it as it would NOT be cost effective. Your best bet for trying to stop rust would be a designed undercoating like Corrosion-Free.

Ceramic Coating and Car Washes

Yes Ceramic Coating can go through automatic car washes IF they are touch-free. It is not recommended to go through any brush-based automatic car wash; including “soft-touch”. These washes will scratch your Ceramic Coating the same way that they would scratch a clear coat. These small scratches (sometimes called swirl marks) will reduce the luster of your vehicle. This is because the light cannot cleanly reflect off the surface, but instead refracts.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ceramic Coating Related to Application and Reapplication:

What Ceramic Coating Should I Use? / What Ceramic Coating is Best?

What Ceramic Coating is best for your car will ALWAYS be a somewhat loaded question to ask. There is no one except you that can make that decision. Ultimately, the biggest guidance we have is that single layer coatings have traditionally worked better for both us and our clients. If you have a small budget: DIY might be a great answer for you if you are somewhat skilled with your hands. If going the DIY route – your coating should come in a 30-50 ml bottle NOT a spray bottle.

Our direct experience: We have installed for 2 major manufacturers (System X / Ceramic Pro) and 2 or 3 smaller brands since our start. With that said – we now install our own privately labeled formula. Our biggest reason for the shift was that too many gimmicks seemed to be attached (“Scratch Resistance” / “Sacrificial Layer” / BS Warranties) to the professional brands. Ultimately, a great brand can be installed poorly and lower quality coating can be installed to last for years. The most important part is NOT the brand – but rather who is doing the installing.

When to Use Ceramic Coating?

If you are wondering when to use Ceramic Coating – literally any time is a great time, provided the clear coat is still sound. The ideal time to use Ceramic Coating is when the vehicle is brand new; as this will allow you to seal in a showroom new look. With that said, even a few model years old you can utilize paint correction to get that new look back before sealing it with a Ceramic Coating. Another great time for Ceramic Coating would be shortly after a new paint job, wrap or ppf. This will assist in keeping all 3 of those scenarios easier to clean and maintain.

Which Ceramic Coating Lasts the Longest?

How long Ceramic Coatings will last will ALWAYS come down to the installer. Certainly professional grade Ceramic Coatings will outlast consumer grade, but it is entirely possible for a 3 year coating installed well to outlast a 5 year coating installed poorly. Coatings by the Bay just recommends reading any warranty / fine print attached to the yearly rating and warranty of your Ceramic Coating. It will almost always say something to the effect of it all comes down to how well you care for it.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (What Ceramic Coating Lasts 5 Years?) (How Long Ceramic Coating Last?)

Can Ceramic Coating Be Applied Over Wax?

Ceramic Coating cannot be applied over wax. If you were to try to make Ceramic Coating go over wax it would not have a way to fill the clear coat’s pores or chemically bond. It would lead to a near instant failure as wax itself fails quickly and that is your base layer with which the Ceramic Coating is bonded.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Can Ceramic Coating Go Over Wax?)

Can Ceramic Coating Be Reapplied?

Yes – Ceramic Coating can be reapplied. The existing coating would need to be buffed off the surface with a mixture of wet sanding and compounding. Once you have a fresh surface you are welcome to have a brand new Ceramic Coating applied.

Can Ceramic Coating Be Removed?

Yes, Ceramic Coating can be removed – however we recommend this is done only by a professional. It will involve a mix of wet sanding and machine buffing the painted surfaces where it was previously applied.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (How Remove Ceramic Coating?)

Ceramic Coating Applied to Headlights? / Ceramic Coating for Plastic?

Another great use for Ceramic Coating is application to headlights and plastics. For headlights, Ceramic Coating will help with easily removing bugs and keeping water from sitting on the lamp covers. For plastics, Ceramic Coating helps to lock in the natural oils and keep everything looking newer, longer. It can also restore dry worn plastics – though this is not a permanent fix, you could expect to see a year or more out of a single application. Coatings by the Bay ALWAYS recommends adding the FULL Exterior upgrade to your paint package. This includes wheels, glass, plastics and more!

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Ceramic Coating for Headlights?) (Ceramic Coating for Plastic?)

Can Ceramic Coating Be Applied Outside?

While we cannot speak to every brand; Most Ceramic Coatings manufacturers advise against applying in direct sunlight / outdoors. Ultimately with the investment required for Ceramic Coating – Coatings by the Bay would recommend finding an installer who has a physical location.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Can Ceramic Coating Be Done Outside?)

Can Ceramic Coating Cure Outside?

Technically most coatings are still curing when they leave a professional shop – so yes a Ceramic Coating could cure outside. It takes most Ceramic Coatings about a week to fully cure, but the vehicles are driveable after 3 hours and can get wet after 24 hours. So yes, technically they can cure outside, however Coatings by the Bay recommends they remain in a climate controlled area as much as possible in the first week.

Can Ceramic Coating Be Applied to Glass?

Ceramic Coating CAN be applied to glass and your windshield. It has a hydrophobic reaction; the same as on your paint. Ceramic Coating on glass could also be compared to RainX, but it has a much longer lifespan. Coatings by the Bay ALWAYS recommends adding the FULL Exterior upgrade to your paint package. This includes wheels, glass, plastics and more!

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Ceramic Coating for Windshield?) (Ceramic Coating to Glass?)

Can Ceramic Coating Be Applied to Wheels?

Ceramic Coating can be applied to wheels – only if you like brake dust NOT sticking. Assuming you are among the 99.98% of us who hate embedded metal on your rims – it is a GREAT solution for easier upkeep. Coatings by the Bay ALWAYS recommends adding the FULL Exterior upgrade to your paint package. This includes wheels, glass, plastics and more!

Where to Apply Ceramic Coating?

This question was one we found on “Answer the Public: and weren’t quite sure how it was meant so we will answer both ways. If you are looking to know where to apply Ceramic Coating in the sense of a location – we recommend in a shaded garage or professional shop, never direct sunlight. If you are wondering where to apply Ceramic Coating on your car or truck – absolutely everywhere! It can be applied to paint, glass, plastics, leather, textile, chrome and more! In over 1,000 vehicles protected we have yet to see adverse reactions on any portion of a vehicle, but do test spots if you are unsure.

Ceramic Coating for RV?

RVs can be ceramic coated. Most professionals will actually utilize a marine formulated Ceramic Coating for your RV because the vast majority are gel coat (versus clear coat). Marine formula is slightly more dense and fills the larger pores on boats and RVs more efficiently. If you do happen to have a clear coat on your RV it will be Ceramic coated using the traditional formula.

Ceramic Coating for Tesla Cybertruck?

Coatings by the Bay does NOT recommend coating a Tesla Cybertruck UNLESS you have gotten it wrapped. Ceramic Coating works by filling the pores on a surface – stainless steel is a non porous metal. Those who did experiments with coating a raw Cybertruck saw that a patina appeared (slight yellowing) and streaking was a common issue. Once you have a wrap; from a local shop or Tesla, we absolutely suggest protecting your wrap with a coating! It will make it easy to clean and maintain.

When is Ceramic Coating Applied?

Ceramic Coating is applied whenever you give us a call! All jokes aside, Coatings by the Bay recommends applying Ceramic Coating immediately after purchasing your new car or truck. The longer you wait, the more expensive it becomes. The reasoning behind this increase in cost is that life happens; from etching with hard water and bugs – to scratches entering the surface. This all needs removing prior to a coating.

What Happens When Ceramic Coating Wears Off?

When Ceramic Coating wears off – it will honestly look almost the same as when it was there. Ceramic Coating doesn’t yellow, peel, chip or crack – it will just be a bit more “flat” (less hydrophobics) and it won’t be chemical resistant. In nearly all instances a general consumer wouldn’t even know when the coating has gone beyond its life.

Will Ceramic Coating Cure in Cold Weather?

Most Ceramic Coating manufacturers recommend allowing a coating to cure indoors in a climate controlled area. Ceramic Coating curing in cold weather would be a very slow process. This would also affect flash times. We would not recommend trying to coat your new vehicle in the cold.

Can Ceramic Coating Be Done At Home?

Yes, Ceramic Coating can be done at home. There are many DIY options on the market. Just ensure when you purchase your product it is in a 30-50 ml bottle NOT a spray bottle. DIY options are great for 1-2 years, but will not last as long as a professionally installed Ceramic Coating.

Can Ceramic Coatings Be Done in One Day? / How Long Do Ceramic Coating Cure?

Ceramic Coating can be done in one day – often anytime spent beyond a day is just to allow additional curing time. Anyone who cares about their craft tends to be overly cautious – including detailers/ protection specialists. At Coatings by the Bay we have a 3-24-7 rule. 3 hours after application the vehicle is drivable (in perfect conditions). 24 hours after installation the Ceramic Coating can get wet. Seven days after installation you can do your first wash as the coating is now fully cured. With Coatings by the Bay it takes about 4-10 hours for installation based on which packages you selected and the size of your vehicle.

How Long After Ceramic Coating Can I Drive?

Technically most Ceramic Coated vehicles can be driven just hours after installation – At Coatings by the Bay we have a 3-24-7 rule. 3 hours after application the vehicle is drivable (in perfect conditions). 24 hours after installation the Ceramic Coating can get wet. Seven days after installation you can do your first wash as the coating is now fully cured. To ensure the integrity of the coating we never release the vehicle prior to the 24 hour mark.

How Ceramic Coating is Applied?

Ceramic Coating is typically applied through one of two primary methods. The first and overwhelmingly most popular is hand applied. With this method you poor a few drops onto an applicator pad / block and wipe on. You then buff off and level once the Ceramic Coating has flashed. Another way Ceramic Coating is done would be through an hvlp gun. This is similar to painting and is extremely rare. It still requires leveling once applied and consumes a great deal of product for nearly identical results.

Ceramic Coating Is It Safe?

Ceramic Coatings being safe really comes down to using some very basic PPE while applying. If you have gloves on and some ventilation in the area you are working you should be good to go. If you plan to rip shots with the boys – I do not suggest chugging Ceramic Coating.

What Ceramic Coating Does Toyota Use? (Answer is For ALL Manufacturers)

What brand of Ceramic Coating Toyota uses happened to be the top researched manufacturer specific inquiry (according to Answer the Public), but this answer will apply to BMW, Audi, Lexus, Mercedes, etc. Ultimately every dealership has it at their own discretion to select one of the national dealership scam coatings or outsource to a local detailer. Your Best Solution? The best solution is to seek out a professional – not a salesperson, for your paint protection needs. The coatings fail almost instantly from the dealer – you are strictly purchasing a warranty. We have all been burned by fine print before.

Ceramic Coating for Boats?

There are many wonderful marine grade Ceramic Coatings for boats. A Ceramic Coating on your boat can help prevent water spotting, oxidation, general cleaning and more. With most boats you will only see a couple seasons of life before needing a new coating. This is due to the intense abuse caused by the friction of the boat against the water.

Coatings by the Bay does not offer Ceramic Coating for anything but cars and trucks, so we cannot recommend a specific brand. We do however recommend that you see someone who specializes in marine vessels – NOT your local detailer that says “yeah I can do that”. Working with a gel coat is much different than a clear coat. It requires different tools and you will likely be less than ecstatic with the results of the “I can detail anything” guy (or gal). If the person you are researching only has 3 sentences and 2 pictures of a boat on their website; they are likely NOT a good fit.

Can Ceramic Coating Freeze?

Yes, in its liquid / “suspended” form – Ceramic Coatings can freeze. Most manufacturers recommend keeping Ceramic Coating between 55 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Once applied to a vehicle you do not have to worry about freezing temperatures doing any damage to your coating!

Can Ceramic Coating Go Bad?

Most manufacturers set a short window after opening a bottle of Ceramic Coating in which it should be used (30 to 90 days). Once Ceramic Coating is exposed to air; the carrier agents will evaporate and you will be left with a hard crystallized substance. You guessed it – that’s the actual Ceramic Coating!

How Ceramic Coating Works?

Ceramic Coatings are two (or more) parts. Part one being the actual Ceramic Coating, part two being a carrier agent that is made to evaporate rapidly. The carrier agent allows you to evenly spread the Ceramic Coating (by hand or spray gun) over the surface of the vehicle. Clear coat (the most common surface for Ceramic Coating) is porous on a microscopic level. When the Ceramic Coating is spread across the surface it will fill these microscopic pores. The pores being full is what creates that cool water beading effect after rain or while you wash. After a few seconds (to a few minutes) the carrier agent will have evaporated leaving just the Ceramic Coating (and possibly other proprietary chemicals) behind. This is called “flashing”. You then hand level the surface ensuring no high spots (concentrated areas of chemicals).

Frequently Asked Questions About Ceramic Coating Involving “With”

Ceramic Coating with Graphene?

Ceramic Coating with graphene is just one of the latest trends. Ceramic Coating with graphene infused is trying to somehow prove to you that it is even harder than regular Ceramic Coating. Unfortunately the graphene dust that is thrown in the coating is not in the proper structure for the stronger than diamond sales pitch. Ultimately 0 of the major manufacturers of the professional brands have introduced a graphene line. The main 5 manufacturers we reference are CQuartz, Modesta, System X, Gtechniq, Ceramic Pro. Shouldn’t this raise a red flag?

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Ceramic Coating with Graphene Near Me?)

Ceramic Coating with PPF?

Ceramic Coating with PPF is the ultimate combination in vehicle protection. The paint protection film (PPF) is great at stopping rock chips and scratches; which is something Ceramic Coating cannot do. PPF is not easy to maintain – so adding a Ceramic Coating on top makes the clean up process a breeze!

The cost for PPF with Ceramic Coating can range widely. WIth PPF you can protect just the impact areas for about $2,500 or protect the entire vehicle which will range up to $8,000 – $10,000. The cost of adding Ceramic Coating will be minimal compared to the PPF. An entire exterior of your vehicle getting a 5 year coating should fall around $1,500, but this cost may be reduced if you have it done by the same shop who is installing the paint protection film. This means that you will spend about $4,000 on a basic level of ppf (high impact areas) and full exterior Ceramic Coating application for a Tesla Model S Plaid. You would spend closer to $12,500 for a Chevy SIlverado to be protected bumper to bumper with PPF and have the same full exterior Ceramic Coating applied.

Ceramic Coating With The Most Silicone Dioxide?

To be quite frank – which Ceramic Coating has the most SiO2 really doesn’t matter. This is a stat pushed by those who are selling gimmicky Ceramic Coatings and it will change once a month. Ultimately, the microscopic pores of your clear coat are only so large; once full with silicon dioxide – the extra is wiped off. Every single professional brand of coatings will “fill” your clear coat’s pores without issue. If “the most SiO2” is being advertised in a consumer grade coating (DIY coating) – be weary. It really means nothing and a reputable manufacturer wouldn’t need to go down this rabbit hole.

Other Related Questions Answered Here: (Ceramic Coating with Highest SiO2?) (Which Ceramic Coating Has the Most SiO2?)

Ceramic Coating With A Spray Gun?

Some professionals; albeit a very small percentage, will apply Ceramic Coating with a spray gun. The only time this form of application makes sense is on very complicated rims with thin spokes. It would be cumbersome coating these spokes one by one – so some will spray and then wipe to level. About 99.99998 percent of ceramic installers will install Ceramic Coating by hand with some form of cloth / block applicator.

Ceramic Coating With UV Protection?

All professional grade Ceramic Coatings have a similar level of UV protection. UV protection is likely over marketed as it will usually take decades for a clear coat to fail. The average American keeps a vehicle for just over 5 years; you will never see the positive effects of the UV protection provided by Ceramic Coating. If you do have a vehicle you are keeping for 20 plus years (a classic) – it is likely garage kept. This means it sees nowhere near enough sun to warrant getting a Ceramic Coating specifically for the UV protection. Ceramic Coating having UV protection should be considered a minor plus.

Ceramic Coating With Paint Correction?

Paint Correction with Ceramic Coating will have your new or used vehicle looking showroom quality for years to come! Unfortunately the standards at the manufacturer are NOT what they were 30 years ago. Even new vehicles typically require a small amount of paint correction before they receive a Ceramic Coating. Coatings by the Bay includes a polish with every Ceramic Coating just to add a little shine prior to locking in the clear coat for years to come. A Single step of paint correction being added prior to Ceramic Coating adds about 80% improvement to scratches and swirl marks. This is usually enough to BLOW away expectations. A client will never be able to see the same things a professional will see.

The price of Paint Correction with Ceramic Coating is a very small add-on. Most detail shops or Ceramic Coating studios (Like Coatings by the Bay) will charge between 300-500 to add a single step of correction prior to applying a Ceramic Coating. Your 5 year Ceramic Coating should be around $1500 for a full exterior to be applied; so in total you are looking at just under $2,000 to bring a 2015 Porsche 911 back to looking new!

Please Note: While there are cases Coatings by the Bay will suggest Paint Correction; it should always be presented as an option NOT a requirement. A shop that cares about you and not their ego will respect your choice to move forward with or skip paint correction. Ultimately it’s your vehicle – not theirs.

Ceramic Coating With A Lifetime Warranty?

Finding a Ceramic Coating with a Lifetime Warranty will be difficult. The owners of Coatings by the Bay did offer such a program at their old shop in Indiana. The only reason it is not offered at Coatings by the Bay is that an abrupt move at the start of 2024 took us out of Indiana. While all our current clients were incredibly supportive and understanding of the need to move – we still did not feel right leaving those warranties open. We do not want the same to happen in 10 years should life present us with another opportunity / curve ball.

Ceramic Coating With No Clear Coat?

Ceramic Coating can be applied to vehicles with no clear coat; typical example being classic cars with single stage paint. Ceramic Coating being applied to single stage paint is less effective than being applied to clear coat, but ultimately most of these vehicles are trailered to events and then put back in a garage. This leaves very little time for “wear and tear” to be put on your vehicle. The biggest advantage is that it will slow down oxidation while the car is sitting.

It should be noted that Ceramic Coating should NOT be applied to a failing or damaged clear coat; as a replacement layer. That is not its purpose. The Ceramic Coating WILL prematurely fail in this instance.

Frequently Asked Questions on Ceramic Coating Involving “This OR That” (This Versus That)

Ceramic Coating or PPF? / Ceramic Coating or Clear Bra?

If you are wondering which is best for your vehicle; Ceramic Coating or PPF, it really comes down to your needs. Some owners of vehicles plan to have their vehicle for 20 years and want to maintain every possible penny of value by avoiding rock chips and scratching. This would mean you should lean towards PPF. Maybe you just want your new car to remain shiny and easy to clean at a reasonable cost for the next 3 to 5 years. In this instance Ceramic Coating is probably your best bet. PPF can be quite expensive (up to $10,000) and this is usually the primary disqualifier.

Ceramic Coating or Wax? / Ceramic Coating or Sealants?

Ceramic Coating versus wax / sealants is an easy debate to settle. If you plan to use brush based automatic car washes then wax and sealants is your winner; as investing in Ceramic Coating just to scratch it up wouldn’t make sense. In every other aspect Ceramic Coating makes more sense. It is more cost effective (in the long term), offers a high gloss, is easier to clean and provides much better protection against mother nature.

Ceramic Coating or Graphene Coating?

Ceramic Coating versus a graphene coating is a no brainer… Ceramic Coating. The effects of the graphene powder are negligible and gimmicky. The super strength that is present with graphene is only in a very specific atomic chain – which is not present in the coatings. No major manufacturer of Ceramic Coatings has added a graphene line, but yet they have expanded into tint, PPF, cleaners etc.  This should be a big red flag.

Ceramic Coating or Wrap?

These two; ceramic coating versus wrap, have very different purposes and don’t necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. Wraps are typically used as a cheaper alternative to a repaint OR for company vehicles to market. They provide very little “protection”. A ceramic coating would be great for application after having a wrap done to help make it easier to clean, higher gloss and offer some protection against mother nature.

A very specific note about the Cybertruck: If you are looking at adding Ceramic Coating – it should be wrapped first! Applying Ceramic Coating directly to the stainless steel surface can lead to a yellowing (patina) effect. We know the official Tesla wrap is limited to CA / TX, but we HIGHLY suggest seeking out a local wrap shop prior to having a Ceramic Coating applied.

Ceramic Coating or Powder Coating?

Ceramic Coating versus powder coating is another comparison where the protections are designed for very different purposes. Ceramic coating is designed to be a cost effective way to protect the entirety of your vehicle inside and out. Powder coating would not go much beyond the rims of the vehicle. To powder coat an entire car would easily be into the five figure range and could lead to many problems in reassembly. It is a very thick coating so aligning parts after paint would be the largest reassembly issue.

Ceramic Coating or PPF Applied First?

PPF should ALWAYS be applied first. The properties of Ceramic Coating make it difficult for anything to stick to the surface. Paint protection film has an adhesive solution placed between the film and your vehicle. If Ceramic Coating were applied first; the PPF would be likely to prematurely fail.
